Full Bloom

Full Bloom Tea specializes in bouquets you can drink.

Just imagine, the perfect gift for Mother's Day, an anniversary, a birthday... or just because. At Full Bloom Tea you can get beautiful bouquets, and the best part is... you can drink them too.

These bouquets are made up of tea leaves, so they are the perfect gift for the tea drinker in your life. You will find a wide array of aromatic bouquets, with many fragrant blends of tea available for you to choose from.

I'm a big drinker of tea myself (I love Oolong tea, but also have a weakness for any blend with a bit of a woody taste), and I can say that receiving a bouquet like this would be way better than a typical floral arrangement. I find flowers nice to look at, but I never quite know what to do with them when they begin to fade. That's a problem I wouldn't have to worry about with a specialty Full Bloom Tea bouquet. These bouquets will last for as long as there is tea to drink, and tea leaves can keep for a good long time.

At Full Bloom Tea, you will find bouquets for prices starting at $29. That is really a great deal, if you want to surprise the tea drinker in your life. Visit the website today, and check out the range of bouquets... and some really great prices. You'll be glad you did, and so will the special someone who receives the special bouquet.

John 1:1, in translation

Another point that I’ve found difficult in Bible translations is from John 1:1. The NIV says, “In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

It’s this word “Word” that I find tricky. I guess we all know about the whole concept of the logos that it is translated from, and that has gotten a lot of attention over the years.

In Chinese it is translated as 道 (dao). That’s the Way, as in Taoism’s central thought (it is the root word in Taoism).

I waver between liking and disliking this translation. It is innovative, and it does something similar to what John does in using the idea of the logos -- it takes an idea that is central to a culture and thought system and reappropriates it, infusing it with a new (God-given) meaning.

On the other hand, the 道 is a different concept than the logos altogether. One major difference, which is what most troubles me, is that the 道 is “that which cannot be expressed,” whereas the logos points to the ultimate expression. That creates a sticky sort of translation issue.

On the other hand, the elegance and beauty of the translation is intriguing. It does, at the least, give one pause for thought.

Translating Colossians

I meant to follow up on my comments about Bible translations earlier than this, but I've been pretty bogged down. I've finally gotten to it now.

I am in the midst of working on Colossians with the group here, and we've come across some funny translations.

Here are a few of the verses that are tough to translate:

Colossians 2:9 from the NIV

For in Christ all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form

Yikes! that is a very tough thought to translate into Chinese. The main version of the Chinese Bible botches this one badly, which is sad when you consider its significance in the message of the New Testament. One of our members, though, had an interesting translation from a newer version. It translated "Deity" as 神类 -- the nature/essence/being of God/gods. (人类 is humanity -- the nature/essence/being of humans.) That was a nice job of a tough passage.

Colossians 1:15, in the NIV, says:

He is the image of the invisible God

That is not especially easy to translate into Chinese, though not as difficult as the above example. But, the sad thing is that the translation gets bogged down not at the more difficult part, but at something that should be easy. It says 爱子是那不能看见之神的像 in the Chinese version. The problem I have is with the phrase 那不能看见之神 -- it contains an unnecessary ambiguity. It can mean "the invisible God/god" or it can mean "the God/god without sight." (Like the blind God of Justice?) Granted, I think it is fair to say that most readers would not stumble over this, at least if they already knew something about the God of the Bible. But that is the thing... what about a reader who doesn't know?

And to make it worse, the problem could've been solved quite easily. I think most children who speak Mandarin could fix that ambiguity problem. While it isn't necessarily a big deal, I find it irritating because the problem is easy to fix.

And that isn't even all. Our whole study of Colossians has revealed several spots where the translation is really rough. It's sad, because I find the English version of the book very poetic and very beautiful.

Infomercial Season

Spring is here, and it is infomercial season!

I know what you are thinking, and it is just what I was thinking when I heard from my sponsor for this post... you mean there's an infomercial season?

And the answer is, yes, there apparently is. And during infomercial season, that is when you will see the great on-TV offers like the Shed Ender. The Shed Ender is one of those products that is ideal for a pet owner like me. My little pups are great hair-droppers, and my house is always in need of a good sweeping... even when it's just been swept.

If you're like me and in great need of a shed ender, you don't have to wait for the infomercial. You can pop over to the TV Products 4 Less website and order yours there.

The God of the Gate, continued

This is a continuation of my translation of the story, The God of the Gate.

From this time on, Tang Tai Zong heard miserable wailing every night in the imperial palace.  He constantly dreamt of a headless River God, raising a bloody dragon head, seeking him out, and angrily reproaching him for his failure to guard what had been entrusted to him.

More Orlando Advice

Are you and your family heading to Orlando? Are you looking for a place to stay while you are there? Well, here's some good news: you don't have to stay in some dumpy little motel while you enjoy all the highlights in Orlando, like Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, and all the other great theme parks in the area (did you know that there are more than 50 there?).

Nope, you don't have to spend your holiday in some hole. When you travel to Orlando, you can put up at one of the nice Orlando vacation rentals available there. It's the perfect place to relax at the end of a long day of play. And with many beaches in just a 40 minute drive from Orlando, more top-rated golf courses within near driving distance than anywhere else, and all those great theme parks (did I mention that there are more than 50?), you're sure to have your days packed full of fun.

If you've been to Orlando before, don't let that stop you. It's a changing, growing place, and you're sure to enjoy it the second time around!
